The Island Location

The two northern Islands, Sunset I and II, bridge to the main island at 29th Street and offer quick access to the Julia Tuttle Causeway and 41st Street. Sunset Islands III and IV are the southernmost neighborhoods and are within walking distance of Lincoln Road and South Beach, connecting to Miami Beach’s main island at 20th Street. The original, grand, balustraded white bridges connecting the Sunset Islands were declared historic by the city of Miami Beach in 1997. There is no bridge between the southern two Sunset Islands and the northern two. Instead, a wide channel between Islands II and III provides a broad connection from Sunset Lake to Biscayne Bay. Yachters seek out the Islands, as they allow larger vessels unrestricted access to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

Sunset Islands History

Like many of the residential islands in Biscayne Bay, the Sunset Islands were originally mangrove islands in a bight of Miami Beach’s main island. At various times, they were called Chequesha, Sandwich Gulf, Cape River, and Dartmouth Sound. The Islands date back to 1925, when the property of Stephen Lynch, founder of Paramount Pictures, was cut off from the rest of Carl Fisher’s land by a canal and body of water Fisher called Sunset Lake. Sunset Lake exists today as the body of water bounded by Sunset Islands and the shore of Miami Beach’s main island. Further dredging took place in 1926, but real development did not begin until 1934. As the only prime waterfront real estate in Miami Beach not owned by Fisher or the Collins/Pancoast interests, it was to Fisher’s benefit to block the Sunset Islands’ development until his holdings were sufficiently spoken for. The Sunset Islands Company began building houses, and Lynch’s Hollywood connections added cachet, as the homes were marketed to stars and high-society. More homes were built over the years as the low-key Islands continued to attract upscale buyers. Like all of Miami Beach developed north of Lincoln Road through the 1930s, the Sunset Islands were restricted to Gentiles. In fact, the last Gentiles-only neighborhood in Miami was Sunset Island II. This restriction finally became history in 1972.
