Development Specs & History

The Roney Plaza Hotel was Miami's first grand beachfront resort. It was the Fontainebleau before the Fontainebleau existed. Originally developed by Newton Roney, a New Jersey lawyer who decided to become a Miami real-estate magnate instead. Roney Plaza was the first hotel on Miami Beach to offer cabanas, tennis and a golf course. Rich in history and fame, the resort attracted a who's who that included Hollywood stars and guests included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. Desi Arnaz often performed in the Roney's world famous Bamboo Room and radio personality Walter Winchell did many of his famous broadcasts there. The hotel's Bamboo Room & Restaurant was the place to be seen on the Beach for decades.

Roney Plaza was built by N.B.T. Roney with architect Schultze & Weaver and opened in 1925. Schultze & Weaver was also responsible for the Freedom Tower and the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables plus other grand hotels such as New York's Waldorf-Astoria and The Breakers in Palm Beach. The famous hotel could not compete when megaresorts such as the Fontainebleau opened. In 1968 the Franklin Brother Construction Group purchased the property then demolished the Roney Plaza hotel in 1968 and re-built a new Roney Plaza, which opened in 1971 and was home to the famed 30,000 square foot Roney Pub. Today, the property has retained its historical name and has undergone a major renovation throughout, both structural & cosmetic, that included new glass balconies and high impact windows. This historic property has since been known under a number of names, including the Gansevoort and currently 1 Hotel & Homes on the north side which was acquired by Host Hotels and Resorts.
